Greenaway: The Early Films [DVD]

A box set of films by Peter Greenaway

Contains the two DVD sets GREENAWAY: THE SHORTS and GREENAWAY: THE FALLS

Before he wowed audiences with such stunning and controversial international arthouse hits such as The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, The Pillow Book, and Prospero’s Books, Peter Greenaway concocted a series of seven witty and inventive short films, as well as his first spectacular feature magnum opus, The Falls.

Zeitgeist Films is proud to present the home video debut of these eight cinematic gems in two gorgeous DVD editions—available together in a specially packaged box set or as individual discs. Both are packed with additional content—including hundreds of original paintings by Greenaway, original video pieces and tons of archival material.

GREENAWAY: THE SHORTS: Six immensely playful works that take pleasure in outlandish detail, fake erudition and corkscrew narratives are the centerpiece of this disc. Their content varies widely—from the condensed, wry history of 37 people who have fallen to their deaths from windows (Windows), to a sequence of 92 maps to guide a dead ornithologist to the afterlife (A Walk Through H) set to a thrilling score by award-winning composer Michael Nyman (The Piano).

GREENAWAY: THE FALLS: A mammoth (195 mins) pseudo-documentary, The Falls is divided into 92 “biographies” of people affected by the VUE: the Violent Unknown Event, a mysterious apocalyptic occurrence that has left a substantial section of the public speaking bizarre languages, dreaming of water and identifying with birds. The Falls is paired with the furiously funny satire Vertical Features Remake. In the near future a group of self-important academics argue about the work of Tulse Luper—Greenaway’s cinematic alter-ego and best-known fictional character—as they attempt to reconstruct a lost short film. Michael Nyman provided the score for both films, with back-up from the father of ambient music, Brian Eno.
