Who's Who in The Corporation
Bibliography: Law
Bakan, J. (2004). The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power. New York: The Free Press.

This book, authored by one of The Corporation’s film makers, provides the basis for the film. Because it elaborates on theories and concepts, it is an excellent companion reading, particularly for students of law.
Berenson, A. (2003) The Number: How The Drive for Quarterly Earnings Corrupted Wall Street and Corporate America. New York: Random House.

The author argues that the “cult of the number” (i.e., overemphasis on financial performance) has been the subject of financial manipulation and amounts to a failed short-term business perspective that neglects planning for sustained economic growth. The premise and conclusion parallel key themes in The Corporation, but give different examples.
Brewster, M. (2003). Unaccountable: How the Accounting Profession Forfeited a Public Trust. Hoboken, NJ: J. Wiley and Sons.

This book chronicles the US audit system, with a particular focus on the Enron Arthur Andersen case, where auditors are consultants and are paid for by the very firms they are auditing. This addresses aspects of The Corporation’s chapter titled Mindset.
Partnoy, F. (2003). Infectious Greed: How Deceit and Risk Corrupted the Financial Markets. New York: Times Books/Henry Holt Co.

This is a look at the increasingly volatile world of illegal corporate finance and accounting that has led to several spectacular financial collapses in the past decade, shedding additional light on central themes in The Corporation.
Pinto, A.R. & Branson, D.M. (1999). Understanding Corporate Law. Miamisburg, OH: Lexis Publishing.

This text provides foundation knowledge for understanding issues of corporate law in the US. Its contents will assist students viewing The Corporation in understanding corporate legal entities and governing regulations.
Watkins, S. and Swartz, M. (2003). Power Failure: The Inside Story of the Collapse of Enron. New York: Doubleday.

Watkins, the infamous “whistleblower” at Enron, chronicles a corporate culture and a series of accounting illegalities that led to the famous collapse of this once powerful corporation. This provides a case example that parallels some of the issues brought to light in The Corporation.
